The Mobile Commons portfolio spans five products accumulated over two decades: mCommons (formerly Mobile Commons), Waterfall, Rant and Rave, ProComms, and Hipcricket. Each product has its own codebase, customer base, and technology history, serving nonprofit, commercial, and public sector clients across the US and UK.
I joined Upland Software in September 2021 as Director of Software Engineering, initially leading BlueVenn, a multi-channel marketing automation platform. Over time my remit expanded to include Rant and Rave and then Mobile Commons, and when Upland divested Mobile Commons as a standalone business in June 2025, I was appointed Vice President of Engineering.
Vice President of Engineering
June 2025 – Present
My primary focus is a platform transformation: building a new unified messaging platform on an Elixir, Snowflake, and AWS foundation, consolidating two decades of product history and technical debt into a single coherent architecture.
As part of that strategy, I led a build-vs-buy evaluation of journey orchestration, a table stakes capability for the platform. The evaluation resulted in a buy decision to embed a third-party tool, saving significant engineering time and allowing the team to focus on the differentiated parts of the product.
In September 2025, I restructured the engineering organisation using the unFix crew model, creating autonomous product and platform crews with end-to-end ownership of their domains. I’m also driving a deliberate shift to Elixir as our primary backend language across the platform.
The organisation is fully remote and internationally distributed, with ways of working, ceremonies, and onboarding designed around that rather than against it.
I’ve rolled out an AI-first development workflow across the full engineering organisation, with AI generating a substantial share of code on integration projects and sharply reducing the time spent on unit test creation. Alongside this, I’ve established an automation-first QA mandate for the new platform: no manual testing, with a fully automated pipeline as the sole gate to production.
September 2021 – June 2025
I held Director of Software Engineering roles across three product lines, at times carrying concurrent responsibility for more than one, leading fully remote, internationally distributed teams throughout.
Mobile Commons
January 2024 – June 2025
Led software engineering for Mobile Commons, an SMS and mobile messaging platform serving nonprofits and advocacy organisations across the United States. Rebuilt the broadcast generation engine in Elixir, achieving a substantial improvement in generation speed for large sends. Extended the platform’s capabilities with RCS Business Messaging support, CRM integrations with Salesforce Lightning and ActionKit for bi-directional donor data syncing, and Attribution Analytics through a partnership with Frakture.
Rant and Rave
March 2023 – June 2025
Led software engineering for Rant and Rave, a customer engagement platform managing millions of customer interactions for enterprise brands across the UK. Responsible for a team delivering real-time feedback capture, sentiment analysis, and customer experience tooling across web, SMS, and voice channels. Delivered a new React-based UI replacing the legacy interface, alongside enhanced self-service capabilities that reduced reliance on professional services for onboarding and configuration.
BlueVenn
September 2021 – December 2023
Led software engineering for BlueVenn, a multi-channel marketing automation platform with an integrated Customer Data Platform. Responsible for engineering delivery across a product used by clients across the UK, Europe, and US to unify customer data and coordinate cross-channel marketing campaigns. Delivered a re-platforming of the product’s data architecture, migrating to Snowflake as the core data store to enable greater scalability and analytical capability.
